About PCOS - POCD

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder in women during the reproductive age. It is the condition when female ovaries tend to make more of the male hormones as compared to female hormones.

If the condition is not treated on time, it can lead to serious problems like type 2 diabetes, obesity, infertility, etc. Women suffering from PCOS may have irregular, infrequent, or prolonged menstrual cycles and excess male hormone (androgen) levels leading to abnormal hair growth.

What are the PCOD and PCOS ?

PCOD or PCOS is a condition that affects women’s ovaries, the reproductive organs that produce progesterone and estrogen hormones that help in regulating the menstrual cycle and also produce a small amount of hormones inhibin, relaxin, and male hormones called androgens.

Almost 10% of women in the world are suffering from PCOD. In comparison to PCOD women with PCOS produce higher-than-normal amounts of male hormones. This hormone imbalance causes them to skip menstrual periods and makes it harder for them to get pregnant.

  • Can managing weight help in treating PCOS symptoms?

For women with obesity, weight loss can help often regulate the menstrual cycle. Even a loss of 5-10 kgs can help regulate the menstrual cycle and make them more regular.
